Connect Four looks simple. That is the trap.

Connect Four is a game of gravity, patterns, and little acts of misdirection. The board is small enough to understand at a glance—and deep enough to surprise you.

From a toy shelf to a classic

The familiar vertical grid was created in the 1970s and quickly became a favourite because the rules take seconds to explain and the tension starts immediately.

Unlike tic-tac-toe, Connect Four gives every move weight. Pieces fall, columns fill, and a harmless-looking placement can quietly force the ending several turns later.

The game is solved with perfect play, but that does not make a real match boring. Human attention, tempo, and the temptation to chase a flashy line keep every board alive.

How to play Connect Four

Connect Four is a game of gravity, patterns, and little acts of misdirection. The board is small enough to understand at a glance—and deep enough to surprise you.

1. Drop a disc

Players take turns dropping one disc into any open column. Gravity carries it to the lowest available space.

2. Build a line

Make a line of four discs horizontally, vertically, or diagonally before your opponent does.

3. Watch the centre

The centre columns create more possible lines than the edges. Use them carefully, and never give your opponent an easy double threat.

A fact worth sharing

The board

The classic board has seven columns and six rows, creating 69,000,000,000,000 possible positions.

The first player

With perfect play, the first player can force a win—but only by seeing patterns several moves ahead.

The sneaky win

A double threat is the heart of the game: one move that creates two winning lines your opponent cannot block together.

One drop. Then another.

Bring a friend, choose a column, and see who can make the board tell the truth first.
